The heavyweight clash between Strikeforce champion, Alistair Overeem and heavy hitting Brett Rogers, set to go down on May 15th in St. Louis, Missouri, will be for the title it has been confirmed today.
The news was confirmed to MMAWeekly.com by Strikeforce official, Mike Afromowitz on Sunday, clearing up the speculation once and for all.
Overeem captured the title back in 2007 when he stopped MMA veteran, Paul Buentello in the second round. Following the fight the Dutchman decided to head to Japan and fight for both the DREAM and K-1 promotions, ignoring overtures from Strikeforce to return and defend his title.
As for Rogers, “The Grim” suffered his first career loss last time out, losing via knockout to WAMMA heavyweight champion, Fedor Emelianenko in Chicago, Illinois. Prior to the loss he had looked impressive, scoring a first round knockout win over former UFC champion, Andrei Arlovski which shocked the world.
The event in St. Louis, dubbed “Heavy Artillery” will feature another blockbuster heavyweight clash as Arlovski returns to the Strikeforce cage in an attempt to resurrect his career against former EliteXC heavyweight champ, Antonio “Big Foot” Silva.
