One Minute Changes Everything
By: David Tees
(bigtees360@yahoo.com)On Saturday Night February 3rd, former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir defeated former WWE star Brock Lesnar in one minute at UFC 81: Breaking Point. Not many times in life will one minute make two careers, just like it did this past Saturday Night when Frank Mir fought Brock Lesnar.
One minute changes everything…
Brock Lesnar hit the octagon to a chorus of “boo’s” from the UFC crowd, but that would change a short time later. The minute the referee started the fight, Brock Lesnar exploded on Frank Mir like a bull through a china shop.
Brock Lesnar connected on enough strikes to put down just about any fighter in MMA, but it was one bad referee call that changed everything. The referee called Brock Lesnar on an illegal strike to the back of Frank Mir’s head and called for a one point deduction from the judges score card. The fight restarted and Brock Lesnar exploded on Frank Mir again like a bull through the very same china shop. However, the experience of Frank Mir allowed Brock Lesnar to be captured in a heel hook and Brock Lesnar was forced to tap out.
Brock Lesnar started the fight as the heel of the fight and he exited the octagon a hero of the fight, which makes the Brock Lesnar/UFC future very bright. One fight does not make or break a career as young as Brock Lesnar’s career, but this one fight did make Brock Lesnar a hero to the UFC faithful will pay to see again and again.
One minute changes everything…
Frank Mir was put against Brock Lesnar for one simple reason, because the UFC believed that Brock Lesnar could destroy the former UFC Heavyweight Champion and become the next big star. Frank Mir had opposite plans though and forced Brock Lesnar to tap out to a vicious heel hook in just one minute into their anticipated battle. Frank Mir turned one minute of fighting into many future years worth of opportunities and another possible shot at the UFC Heavyweight Title.
Frank Mir fought four fights after his motorcycle accident and before UFC 81: Breaking Point, but the win over Brock Lesnar has put Frank Mir but to were he was prior to the accident, a top star in the biggest MMA organization in the world.
One minute changes everything…
In one minute, the UFC had one brand new star and one re-emerging star that can put money in their wallets for years to come. For Brock Lesnar, the UFC has a new star who could become a viable challenger for the UFC Heavyweight Title in 2009 and/or 2010. For Frank Mir, the UFC has the option to put him in the highly anticipated rematch with Tim Sylvia or immediately give him a title fight with new UFC Heavyweight Champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
