“ECW Title Tournament Finals
Chris Benoit vs. CM Punk
After then ECW Champion Bobby Lashley was drafted to WWE Raw, Raw GM The Coach declared that Bobby Lashley would be stripped of the ECW Title. A tournament was made that first saw Chris Benoit defeat Elijah Burke, then CM Punk defeated Marcus Cor Von to advance to the finals. A late Sunday internet rumor proclaimed that Chris Benoit may not be at the PPV due to immediate family emergencies.
My Prediction: Chris Benoit”
- Excerpt From The Jobbers Journal #65: A Look At WWE Vengeance
When I wrote that portion of my column just two days ago, no where in my wildest thoughts or imagination did I think I would be writing the column that I’m writing at this moment. Monday evening, I received an instant message from Koco Sports owner Dave Kocotos along the lines saying “are you sad about Benoit.” My first thoughts were that my friend was talking about Chris Benoit not making the scheduled appearance at WWE Vengeance.
Little did I know, when I went to check out wrestling news an hour before WWE Raw was set to begin that I’d be having the shock of my life. I went onto a wrestling news website and the top headline said that Chris Benoit, Nancy Benoit and son Daniel Benoit have passed away. For the remainder of the night, I went into the same shock I did when Eddie Guerrero passed away suddenly only two years earlier.
To me, Chris Benoit was the greatest professional wrestler ever to lace up a pair of wrestling boots and step into the ring. The matches Chris Benoit has had with Jushin “Thunder” Liger, The Great Sasuke, Bret “The Hitman” Hart, Dean Malenko, Kurt Angle, Eddie Guerrero, MVP, Edge, Triple H, Shawn Michaels and others will go down as some of the greatest battles of all time.
Not to be overshadowed, Nancy Sullivan, who in pro wrestling was known simply as “Woman” also was a major fixture in both ECW and WCW. In ECW, Woman took part in one of the greatest angles in ECW when a “blinded” Sandman returned from his “injuries” and beat the living crap out of Tommy Dreamer. I will remember her most in WCW as a valet (along with the late Miss Elizabeth) of The Four Horsemen.
No matter what the sad circumstances that surround the deaths of Chris, Nancy and Daniel Benoit…their contributions in the pro wrestling industry will never be forgotten.
I would like to close this column by sending out my condolences to the family, friends and fans of The Benoit Family as they all go through this truly rough time.
